As thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts roar into Daytona Beach for the 33rd annual Biketoberfest, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood is making one thing crystal clear: troublemakers are not welcome.

With sunny skies and a festive atmosphere drawing bikers from across the country, law enforcement is ramping up its presence to ensure the event remains safe and enjoyable for all. Sheriff Chitwood, known for his no-nonsense approach, has issued a blunt warning to anyone considering unlawful behavior during the four-day celebration.

“This isn’t the Wild West,” Chitwood said. “If you come here looking to stir up trouble, you’re going to find yourself in handcuffs. We’re not playing games.”

This year’s Biketoberfest marks the first major event in the region since Florida’s open carry law went into effect, allowing individuals to openly carry firearms. The new law has prompted heightened vigilance from law enforcement, especially in light of a violent incident earlier this year involving rival motorcycle gangs that resulted in 30 arrests.

“There are no guardrails yet on how we’re going to proceed with open carry,” Chitwood explained. “But let me be clear: if you unlawfully display a firearm—fire a shot in the air, wave it around—you’re going to get arrested. You have to follow the law”.

To maintain order, the sheriff’s office has deployed both uniformed and plainclothes officers throughout Daytona Beach, particularly in high-traffic areas like Main Street. Surveillance cameras and license plate readers are also being used to monitor activity and identify potential threats.

“You’ll see a visible security presence—more uniforms, more patrol cars,” Chitwood said. “But there are also things you won’t see. We’ve got plainclothes officers and tech tools working behind the scenes to keep everyone safe”.

In addition to law enforcement efforts, Volusia County officials are urging drivers to be extra cautious on the roads. With increased motorcycle traffic, residents and visitors are reminded to look twice before turning or changing lanes, and to allow extra following distance. Motorcyclists are encouraged to wear protective gear, avoid impaired riding, and obey speed limits.

Despite the stern warnings, Chitwood emphasized that the goal is not to dampen the spirit of Biketoberfest but to ensure it remains a safe and memorable experience.

“We want everyone to have a good time, get home safely, and come back next year,” he said.

As Biketoberfest continues through Sunday, the message from Volusia County law enforcement is loud and clear: enjoy the ride, but respect the rules—or face the consequences.
