The Foundation of Love Learning Academy lit up with excitement this week—not from flames, but from the flashing lights and big-hearted heroes of the Daytona Beach Fire Department’s Engine 5 crew, who brought fire safety education to life in a way students won’t soon forget.

As part of Fire Prevention Month, the Engine 5 team rolled into the schoolyard with their gleaming red truck and a mission: to empower young minds with the knowledge and confidence to stay safe in emergencies. The crew greeted students with smiles and high-fives before diving into a hands-on demonstration of what firefighters wear when responding to a fire. From heavy-duty helmets and flame-resistant suits to oxygen tanks and thermal imaging cameras, the gear was both fascinating and reassuring—especially for children who might find it intimidating during a real emergency.

“We want kids to know that even though we may look a little scary in our gear, we’re here to help,” said one firefighter. “If they ever need us, they shouldn’t hide—they should come to us.”

The visit wasn’t just educational—it was interactive, engaging, and full of heart. Students learned how to spot fire hazards, practiced “stop, drop, and roll,” and talked through escape plans with their teachers. But the highlight of the day came when the children surprised the crew with a special song they had rehearsed just for the occasion. With lyrics focused on getting out safely and calling 9-1-1, the performance was both adorable and impactful. The chorus rang out with confidence, and the firefighters were visibly moved.

“They nailed it,” one crew member said, beaming. “It’s one thing to teach fire safety—it’s another to see it reflected back in such a powerful way.”

The event is part of DBFD’s broader commitment to community outreach and early education, recognizing that fire safety habits formed in childhood can last a lifetime. By visiting schools, engaging with students, and building trust, the department hopes to reduce fire-related injuries and foster a culture of preparedness.

Teachers at the Foundation of Love Learning Academy praised the visit as one of the most memorable days of the year. “Our students were inspired,” said Principal Mariah Jenkins. “They didn’t just learn—they connected. And that’s the kind of impact that changes lives.”

As the fire truck pulled away and the echoes of the children’s song faded into the afternoon air, one thing was clear: Engine 5 didn’t just teach fire safety—they sparked a flame of awareness, courage, and community spirit that will burn bright for years to come.
