DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — October 13, 2025 A quiet neighborhood in Daytona Beach was shaken by tragedy on Friday evening after a woman was found dead in her home, the apparent victim of a fatal dog attack. The incident occurred at approximately 7:11 p.m. on October 10, when officers with the Daytona Beach Police Department and emergency medical services responded to a distress call at 544 Spruce Street.
The call was placed by the victim’s boyfriend, who told authorities he had gone to check on his girlfriend after being unable to reach her by phone. Upon entering the residence, he discovered her unresponsive on the floor and immediately called 911.
When first responders arrived, they found 38-year-old Monica L. Emerson inside the home, suffering from multiple traumatic injuries. Four dogs—described as one large adult male mixed breed and three adult offspring—were roaming freely throughout the residence. Emerson was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to preliminary findings, Emerson’s injuries were consistent with an animal attack. Investigators believe she may have experienced a medical emergency, such as a seizure or cardiac event, which caused her to collapse. During that time, the dogs are believed to have attacked her fatally. Authorities have emphasized that no evidence of foul play or human involvement has been found.
The Daytona Beach Police Department’s Animal Control Services responded to the scene and took custody of all four dogs. The animals were transferred to Volusia County Animal Control Services, where they will be held for a mandatory 10-day observation period before being euthanized, in accordance with public safety protocols.
Emerson’s next of kin has been notified, and grief counselors have been made available to assist the family during this difficult time. The investigation remains active as officials continue to gather information and await any additional forensic findings.
This heartbreaking incident has sparked renewed conversations about the risks associated with owning multiple large dogs, particularly in homes where medical conditions may increase vulnerability. While the exact breed of the dogs has not been disclosed, animal behavior experts note that even well-socialized pets can react unpredictably in moments of confusion or distress—especially when their owner is incapacitated.
Neighbors described Emerson as a quiet, friendly woman who loved animals and had lived in the area for several years. “She was always walking her dogs and seemed to really care for them,” said one resident. “It’s just so hard to believe something like this could happen.”
City officials are urging pet owners to take extra precautions, especially if they live alone or have known health conditions. Recommendations include installing medical alert systems, ensuring pets are properly trained and socialized, and having emergency contacts who can check in regularly.
As the community mourns the loss of Monica Emerson, the Daytona Beach Police Department continues its investigation, committed to understanding the full circumstances behind this devastating event.
