DAYTONA BEACH — After nearly 50 years of serving up schnitzel, sauerkraut, and steins of German beer at Volusia Mall, Mr. Dunderbak’s is preparing for a major transition. The iconic Bavarian-themed restaurant/pub/deli will move to a new location on Beach Street in downtown Daytona Beach in early 2026, signaling a bold new chapter for one of the area’s most cherished culinary institutions.
The move comes amid a wave of revitalization efforts along Beach Street, where a growing number of independent businesses, cultural events, and pedestrian-friendly improvements have transformed the corridor into a vibrant destination. Co-owners Doug and Matt Martin, the father-son team behind Mr. Dunderbak’s, say the decision was driven by a desire to be part of that momentum.
“Downtown has a pulse again,” Doug Martin said. “We’ve watched Beach Street evolve into a place where people want to gather, walk, eat, and celebrate. It feels like the right time to bring our brand of gemütlichkeit — that warm, welcoming spirit — to the heart of the city.”
The new location promises expanded seating, updated décor that blends traditional Bavarian charm with modern touches, and the same beloved menu that has kept generations of locals and tourists coming back for more. From bratwurst and potato pancakes to imported German beers and deli specialties, the Martins plan to preserve the essence of Mr. Dunderbak’s while embracing the energy of downtown.
But what does this mean for the original Volusia Mall location?
That’s still up in the air. The Martins’ lease at the mall expires in March 2026, and while they have the option to renew, no final decision has been made. “We’re weighing our options,” Matt Martin explained. “There’s a lot of nostalgia tied to the mall space, and we know it’s convenient for many of our longtime customers. We haven’t ruled out keeping it as a second location.”
The uncertainty reflects broader changes at Volusia Mall, which has seen shifts in foot traffic and tenant mix in recent years. While some national retailers have exited, local businesses like Mr. Dunderbak’s have remained anchors of community connection. Whether the restaurant continues to operate there or consolidates downtown, the Martins say they’re committed to maintaining the quality and tradition that define their brand.
“We’re not just moving a restaurant,” Doug added. “We’re moving a legacy — and we want to do it right.”
