ORANGE COUNTY, FL — Authorities have made a breakthrough in a months-long investigation into a violent attack that occurred in July along the Little Econ Greenway trail, a popular recreational path in Orange County frequented by joggers, cyclists, and families.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the arrest of 23-year-old Jacoby Vontrell Tillman in connection with the attempted rape of a woman who was assaulted while jogging near Yates Road and Econ Park on the morning of July 25. According to the arrest affidavit, the victim was attacked from behind around 9 a.m. and choked until she lost consciousness. When she regained awareness, she discovered her shorts and underwear had been removed, prompting immediate calls for help.
Investigators say Tillman later confessed to the assault, stating disturbingly that he “wanted to know what it was like to choke someone out.” He now faces multiple felony charges, including attempted sexual battery, battery by strangulation, and false imprisonment.
The arrest came after a tip from the public, aided by surveillance footage released shortly after the incident. The video showed a person of interest near the trail, which helped generate leads and ultimately led detectives to Tillman.
The attack sent shockwaves through the community, raising urgent concerns about safety along public trails. Residents and trail users have since called for increased law enforcement patrols, improved lighting, and emergency call stations along the Little Econ Greenway, which stretches for miles through residential and wooded areas.
“This trail is supposed to be a safe space for exercise and relaxation,” said one local runner. “Knowing someone was attacked in broad daylight is terrifying. We need to feel protected.”
Tillman was not previously known to law enforcement in connection with this case, and investigators have not ruled out the possibility of other victims. The Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation and urges anyone with additional information to come forward.
