📍 Ormond Beach, Florida — A routine traffic stop escalated into a high-alert situation Thursday morning when four individuals fled from officers with the Ormond Beach Police Department (OBPD), prompting a coordinated response from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office (VSO). The incident unfolded in a residential area near Ormond Beach Elementary School, raising concerns for public safety and school security.
Two of the four subjects were quickly located and detained with the assistance of VSO deputies. One of the individuals was found on the grounds of Ormond Beach Elementary, triggering a rapid and precautionary response from law enforcement. Although the school was not placed on lockdown, deputies maintained a visible presence to ensure the safety of students and staff while the situation was resolved.
Upon detainment, both individuals were identified as being in the United States unlawfully. A VSO deputy assigned to the 287(g) task force—a federal-local partnership that empowers trained deputies to perform certain immigration enforcement duties—responded to the scene. After verifying the immigration status of the detainees, the deputy contacted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which confirmed that immigration detainers would be placed on both individuals.
The OBPD transported the subjects to the Volusia County Branch Jail, where they are currently being held without bond. Their identities have not been released, and the nature of the original traffic stop remains under investigation.
The remaining two individuals who fled have not yet been located. Law enforcement agencies are continuing their search and urge residents in the area to report any suspicious activity.
This incident highlights the importance of interagency collaboration in responding to rapidly evolving public safety threats. It also underscores the role of the 287(g) program in addressing immigration-related enforcement at the local level.
Officials are reminding the public that while immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility, local partnerships like 287(g) allow for more immediate action when individuals pose a potential risk to community safety. The presence of one subject on school property has reignited conversations about school security protocols and the importance of maintaining vigilance in and around educational institutions.
As the investigation continues, OBPD and VSO are working closely to ensure that all leads are pursued and that the community remains informed. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
