Volusia County Invites Public Input on Coastal Protection Plan

Volusia County is extending an open invitation to residents, business owners, environmental advocates, and community stakeholders to help shape the future of its treasured coastline through the Coastal Feasibility Study — a forward-looking initiative designed to protect, preserve, and enhance the region’s shoreline for generations to come.

This ambitious study, funded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, represents a critical step in addressing the growing threats posed by climate change, sea-level rise, and increasingly frequent and intense storms. It aims to develop science-based strategies that will reinforce the county’s natural defenses, including its vital dune systems, while ensuring continued public access to beaches and bolstering the resilience of coastal infrastructure and ecosystems.

The Coastal Feasibility Study is not just a technical exercise — it’s a community-driven effort. Volusia County recognizes that the success of any long-term coastal protection plan depends on the voices and values of the people who live, work, and invest in the area. That’s why the county is hosting a series of three public meetings, offering residents a chance to learn more about the study, ask questions, and share their insights and concerns:

  • πŸ“ Tuesday, Oct. 28 | 4–7 p.m.Brannon Center, 105 S. Riverside Drive, New Smyrna Beach

  • πŸ“ Wednesday, Oct. 29 | 4–7 p.m.Daytona Beach Shores Community Center, 3000 Bellemead Drive

  • πŸ“ Thursday, Oct. 30 | 4–7 p.m.Ocean Center, 101 N. Atlantic Ave., Daytona Beach

Each meeting will feature presentations from coastal engineers and environmental planners, interactive displays, and opportunities for attendees to provide feedback on proposed strategies. Topics may include dune restoration techniques, erosion control measures, habitat conservation, and the integration of nature-based solutions into urban planning.

Whether you live directly on the coast, inland, or simply care about the future of Volusia’s natural heritage, your participation is vital. The county is committed to transparency and collaboration, and these meetings are a key part of ensuring that the final plan reflects the diverse needs and priorities of the entire community.
