In a powerful show of compassion and community leadership, Big Joe’s Subs has announced its commitment to supporting Parkinson’s disease research by becoming a monthly donor to the Michael J. Fox Foundation. The decision comes after a personal experience that deeply affected the Romano family, reminding them — and the community — that illness can strike close to home, often without warning.
“We don’t realize the things people are going through until it happens to our own family and loved ones,” said Joe Romano, founder and owner of Big Joe’s Subs. “Parkinson’s is a cruel, relentless disease. Watching someone you care about struggle with it changes everything. We knew we had to do something.”
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement, balance, and coordination. Symptoms often begin subtly — a tremor, stiffness, or slowed movement — but over time, they can become severely disabling. More than 10 million people worldwide live with Parkinson’s, and while treatments exist to manage symptoms, there is still no cure.
The Michael J. Fox Foundation, founded in 2000 by the actor after his own diagnosis, has become the leading nonprofit funder of Parkinson’s research globally. Its mission is to accelerate breakthroughs that will ultimately lead to a cure, while improving the lives of those affected today.
Big Joe’s Subs, a staple in New Smyrna Beach, F known for its hearty sandwiches and welcoming atmosphere, is using its platform to raise awareness and encourage others to get involved. In addition to monthly donations, the shop is launching a “Subs for a Cure” campaign, where a portion of proceeds from select menu items will go directly to the foundation. Informational flyers, donation jars, and social media shout-outs will help spread the word.
Customers are already responding with enthusiasm, sharing stories of loved ones affected by the disease and expressing gratitude for the shop’s advocacy. It’s a reminder that even small businesses can make a big impact — especially when they lead with heart.
